Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Knife & cutting board
  • grill or broiler
  • Spatula
  • serving plates

Ingredients

For the Ranchero Salsa Fresca

  • 3 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 1 large bell pepper, chopped
  • ½ cup green onions, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 jalapeño, finely chopped and seeded
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For the Burger Patties

  • 1½ pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

For Serving

  • 1 large bag corn tortilla chips
  • 1 medium iceberg lettuce, thinly shredded
  • 6 tablespoons sour cream
  • Extra chopped cilantro, optional

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, combine the chopped tomatoes, garlic, bell pepper, green onions, cilantro, jalapeño, lime juice, olive oil, and salt. Mix well, then cover and refrigerate for at least one hour to allow the flavors to blend. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix until evenly combined, then shape into six equal patties about half an inch thick.
  • Preheat a grill or broiler. Cook the patties for about 5 to 7 minutes per side, or until they reach your preferred level of doneness.
  • To assemble, place a layer of tortilla chips in the center of each plate. Spoon a generous amount of the prepared salsa over the chips.
  • Add a layer of shredded lettuce on top, making it slightly larger than the burger patty.
  • Place a cooked burger on top of the lettuce. Add a spoonful of sour cream over each patty.
  • Finish with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro if desired, then serve immediately.

Notes

  • If fresh tomatoes are not in season, drained canned tomatoes can be used as an alternative.
  • Adjust the heat level by adding more chili peppers such as serrano or habanero.
  • Letting the salsa rest enhances its flavor, so avoid skipping the chilling step.
  • Serve immediately after assembling to keep the chips crisp.
